Gazing into belly-buttons reveal our inextricable relatedness to All-That-Is … and everything else. ;-)

Everything that exists, exists in relationships. Everything is interrelated. Belly-buttons symbolize this reality - an umbilical cord is cut, but not interconnectivity and inter-being. We are wired for cooperative affiliation in the marrow of our bones and being. Biology follows evolutionary forces to transcend and include, incorporate and go-beyond in increasingly complex, diverse, sustainable holons of relationship -- some quite personal.

It follows naturally that we experience the seamless, but not featureless, impersonal source & essence of all-that-is, as existentially also personal. Experientially, G.o.d. is at least two-faced: Original faced & personal faced. G.o.d. can have for us the eyes of not only some thing, but some one - someone who knows his/her way about the trenches, trash-heaps and ruins of life. Thus it said that a man called Jesus of Nazareth, in a time of great need, called out to g.o.d. and called him not only father, but "da-da". A "da-da" and/or a "ma-ma" knows your name, cares about you and seeks to embrace and cradle you in loving arms.

Check to see if you have a belly-button -- it's a very personal thing.

Hey Joe, just discovered this post. Good thoughts concerning the role of coffee houses for the production and sustainability of modern culture. They were all the rage in Europe at the turn of the last century, the center for intellectual discussion and debate, and follow in the tradition of salons, taverns (thinking C.S. Lewis and Tolkien), so it's great to hear they are still so successful. Too bad Starbucks is trying to do away with this in favor of a quick buck. Perhaps that will just drive the competition into smaller, local coffee houses anyway. Up here in NY they are few and far between, but still enough to generate a large musical and literate subculture. If you build it, they will come!

You are right, many people who address thousands at a time after a big speech can almost still be caught up in the glory of the experience. They can be just as scattered mentally as the seating in the venue in which they were speaking. It definitely takes skill for one to address the multitudes with just as much sincerity as one addresses the needs and concerns of one.
